Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (December 4, 2003) – CyberGuard Corporation (NASDAQ: CGFW), the technology leader in network security, today announced that it has been ranked as a market challenger in META Group’s recently released METAspectrumSM. CyberGuard achieved the ranking for its entire line of firewall/VPN (virtual private network) appliances. META Group (NASDAQ: METG) is a leading research and consulting firm that focuses on information technology and business transformation strategies.
The new METAspectrum evaluation provides an objective assessment of companies providing enterprise firewalls. CyberGuard was positioned in the “challenger” segment of the METAspectrum analysis, and was specifically recognized for their strong technological capabilities, especially “within military/government organizations that demand particularly high levels of certification and assurance.”
“We are pleased by our favorable rating in the METAspectrum which was based on our technological capabilities and acceptance in the military/government sector”, said Pat Clawson, president of CyberGuard.
CyberGuard is known for its high level firewall/VPN appliances which incorporate multilevel security (MLS). MLS treats each layer of the secure operating system discretely, maintaining complete separation of network traffic from system components. This design removes access to the operating system from would-be hackers, creating a virtually impenetrable firewall environment. CyberGuard is also currently the only firewall provider in the world participating in an ongoing Common Criteria evaluation assurance maintenance program. This is significant because ongoing evaluation assures that, when firewall manufacturers issue new upgrades and revisions to certified technology, the product maintains its certification level.
Mark Bouchard, the senior analyst at META Group who conducted the METAspectrum evaluation, stated, “Most organizations should expect to continue spending on enterprise firewall products for at least the next two to three years as implementations proliferate beyond/within the Internet perimeter zones where firewalls are commonly deployed. The return on this investment should be a reduction in overall risk attributable in part to better protection against application-layer threats, as well as better isolation/containment that can limit the impact of successful attacks to discrete portions of the business.”
“We developed METAspectrum to enable IT professionals to quickly evaluate vendors based on their ability to deliver on the presence and performance criteria that matter most in a given market,” said Bouchard, senior program director, META Group. “With firewalls that means balancing among security, performance, and management capabilities from a technology perspective, and complementing it with top-notch technical support.”
