Tallahassee, FL – (July 1, 2003) – The Datamaxx Group (Datamaxx) and the National Law Enforcement Telecommunication System (NLETS) today announced the execution of a Strategic Partner Alliance Agreement at the 36th Annual NLETS Conference. This agreement allows Datamaxx to wirelessly enable the NLETS user community, and is the first agreement of its kind to be executed by NLETS.
Datamaxx, a Secure Solution Provider, delivering Secure Solution Services (S3), announced the launch of Omnixx STAT to provide communications - any time, any place, to law enforcement and criminal justice agencies throughout the nation. Prior to the launch, Datamaxx and NLETS conducted a highly successful proof of concept project, which combined the power of the NLETS private secure wide area network with the flexibility of wireless communications. This project, made available to a group of NLETS users in Minnesota, Iowa, and Oklahoma, demonstrated the ability for officers in the field to wirelessly access remote information, regardless of the beat they patrol—be it big city street or small town road. “The project allowed wireless traffic to be transported over the existing NLETS infrastructure [a state-of-the-art network and system owned, operated and funded exclusively by state and federal users] to keep costs down for the end user,” said NLETS Executive Director Steve Correll.
Public Safety officials must operate anywhere an incident occurs, be that in an urban or rural environment. Relatively few rural areas are supported by public wireless data carriers, and costs to deploy and maintain private wireless data systems are beyond the reach of many of these agencies. This combination of products and services allow virtually any agency to deploy state-of-the-art wireless data communications without the significant capital expenditures required to deploy terrestrial-based systems.
“Meeting the needs of the rural justice professional has never been more important than it is today,” said Correll. “This satellite solution ensures that officers outside the coverage area of a public carrier’s infrastructure [such as cellular digital packet data or “CDPD”] need no longer suffer without critical information.”
Larry Grund, Chief of the Technology Services Bureau for the Iowa Department of Public Safety and current NLETS President recently illustrated the very real impact of the pilot. On a day starting out like any other, Iowa State Patrol Trooper Doug Cutts became embroiled in an extended car pursuit through a rural area—specifically a cornfield. But despite taking the “scenic” route, satellite technology was able to forward information to Trooper Cutts—literally “in the field” from the episode’s start to finish. The result? An out of state felony warrant arrest. “The only complaint I received from officers during the system proof of concept project was that they know they were required to return the devices at the end of the project,” said Grund.
“The formulation of this Strategic Partner Alliance enhances the ability to expand wireless communications capabilities to every law enforcement and criminal justice agency throughout this nation, and is especially targeted to those agencies that may not have the capital resources to build a private secure communications infrastructure”, said Kay Stephenson, Datamaxx President and CEO. “These capabilities are a necessity in building the foundation for information sharing and access to critical information resources. The extension of the NLETS private secure network to support this service is a key component of global information sharing, and we feel privileged to be a part of this innovative initiative.”
