A report issued by the State University of New York at Buffalo compared the effects (KILL) of an Ultraviolet lamp currently sold for use in commercial and residential water purification with a new Photonic lamp named SIAD from Synergena, Inc. The test results of water contaminated with a 10 unit log loading of E. coli were that the SIAD lamp, 1/3 the size and 75 times the power of the Ultraviolet lamp, delivered more than 100,000 times the kill in 1/40 of the time and greater than 8 times the penetration when compared to the Ultraviolet water purification lamp.

The test showed that the commercially available Ultraviolet lamp achieved a log 10 reduction of 5 units after 2 minutes in a 1/16 inch depth of water under static conditions (NOT flowing).

Ultraviolet water purification of municipal water is gaining popularity. The city of Seattle, Wash. is investing $30 millon in an Ultraviolet water treatment facility. Hawaii, New York and Florida are considering facilities.
