Wireless Internet Zones Now Active In Downtown Jacksonville Neighborhoods
Jacksonville, FL, (June 10, 2002)—City business and government leaders announced the activation of two new neighborhood pilot Wireless Internet Zones in a ceremony today at the Jacksonville Urban League.
The new zones are being made possible by the installation of WIZ antennas located atop the Emmett Reed Center at 1903 West 6th Street, and at the Twin Towers Center at 619 West 44th Street. These new installations are part of the new neighborhood implementation phase of the City’s pioneering Wireless Internet Zone initiative, designed to ensure broad community access to the Internet.
The antennas will extend WIZ access to nearby homes and businesses that sign up for the free service. This phase of the program focuses on maximizing educational and economic opportunities for all Jacksonville citizens.
A Wireless Internet Zone - or “WIZ” - is an access area providing wireless connectivity to the Internet through desktop and laptop computers, or web-enabled handheld devices. When in a Wireless Internet Zone, any device enabled with industry standard 802.11b connectivity will be able to instantly connect to the Internet free of charge. Most newer desktop, laptop and handheld computers support this protocol.
The Jacksonville WIZ is a first-of-its-kind project in a major American city, with a ground-breaking public/private partnership that will provide citizens with access to free high-speed Internet service in an effort to bridge the “digital divide”.
According to Mac Holley, Bank of America Market President and Jacksonville Chamber Existing Business Workforce Development Chair, the WIZ is not really about technology, it is about harnessing the power of the Internet as a tool to help Jacksonville become more productive, promote diversity, educate and train citizens, and to facilitate the economic and workforce development of the region.
“We are expecting great things from the WIZ,” said Alberta Hipps, Jacksonville City Councilwoman and chair of the Council’s Special Committee on Telecommunications and Technology. “This is a very exciting development for the Urban League, and for the citizens of Jacksonville. The WIZ creates opportunities for a broader range of citizens to make connections, learn about jobs, educational and business opportunities, and to access City services.”
Although the WIZ technology is in place and active, Richard Danford, President of the Jacksonville Urban League, elaborated on the need for additional help.
“It’s going to take a real community effort to make this program fully realize its goals, Danford said.” The WIZ program needs help securing adequate equipment and funding, and is asking for local and national businesses and organizations to get involved by donating unutilized computers and/or additional funding for the purchase of hardware and software. Area organizations can also volunteer to host new WIZ computer learning centers within the two WIZ pilot zone boundaries.
Citizens inside the WIZ Zone are encouraged to visit a WIZ sign-up center to learn more about the benefits of the WIZ. There are currently three sign-up centers: The Jacksonville Urban League Headquarters at 903 W. Union Street in La Villa, The Emmett Reed Community Center at 1093 W. 6th Street, and at The Jacksonville Chamber’s Small Business Center located in the Gateway Mall.
