Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (June 4, 2002) – It’s no coincidence that the incidence of hacking goes up when school gets out, says an Internet security expert at CyberGuard Corporation (OTCBB: CYBG). There is a distinct correlation between seasonal trends in hacking and the academic calendar, according to CyberGuard vice president Paul Henry, CISSP, an author and frequent speaker on the risk of security breaches from “script kiddies,” or inexperienced hackers, who download automated hacking tools from the Internet.

Henry today raised concerns over an expected increase in seasonal hacking and predicted, “Spring/summer break 2002 will bring Web site defacements to a new all-time high.” Henry based his predictions on an analysis of a four-year trend of Web site defacements combined with his studies of the habits of novice and unsophisticated hackers, commonly referred to as “script kiddies,” around the world.

"While this trend is predictable, it is also preventable,” said CyberGuard network security expert Paul Henry. “Unfortunately, we often fail to implement the basics of good information security practice year round. While there are certain technologies companies can utilize to prevent the typical types of damage that can occur from less experienced hack attacks, many of these breaches result from the failure of organizations with networks connected to the Internet to exercise due diligence in protecting their systems with available technology.”

Among the measures Henry recommends to address the seasonal threat are the use of (1) strong application proxies that offer a measurable increase in security; (2) application-specific operating systems that provide increased performance along with a higher level of security; and (3) URL redirection which offers network administrators a high degree of flexibility and control.
