EDC PROTÉGÉ WINS FIRST PRIZE IN FAU’s BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION

Gardenia Systems has Florida Atlantic University connections

Boca Raton, FL – May 14, 2002 – The Enterprise Development Corporation (EDC), a public/private partnership specializing in providing strategic business development services to emerging science and technology companies, today announced that Gardenia Systems, a former Technology Business Incubator (TBI) tenant and current protégé in EDC’s STAR BusinessLINC Initiative, was the winner of the Business Plan Competition at Florida Atlantic University College of Business. The winner was first announced at FAU’s Entrepreneurship Leader of the Year Breakfast on April 25, 2002. This year FAU’s Adams Center for IT Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital co-sponsored the competition with tenants of the Research Park at Florida Atlantic University. Eligibility requirements for the FAU competition stipulated that at least one currently-enrolled student at FAU have an ownership percentage in the participating company.

Gardenia’s two principals are closely associated with FAU. Marni Robins received her BS degree with this spring’s graduating class. Her associate, Dr. Qing Hu, is an Associate Professor at the FAU College of Business. Robins and Hu have developed software for both private and public food and beverage institutions. “I was so happy to receive the award,” said Robins. “I hope to use these next six months to fine tune our product and get it to market.”

In addition to the $10,000.00 cash first prize, Gardenia Systems will return to the Technology Business Incubator where it will become a rent-free tenant for six months, another competition prize. “The Adams Center is continually developing innovative programs to support entrepreneurship,” said Robert Keltie, Assistant Director, Adams Center for IT Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital. “We interact on a regular basis with EDC to assist and mentor both our business students and emerging ventures.”

“We look forward to welcoming Gardenia back into the Incubator and will continue to work with them under EDC’s mentor/protégé program,” said Jane Teague, Executive Director of EDC. EDC linked Gardenia to Citrix, which has been advising them with software development information.
