LAS VEGAS, NV – May 8, 2001 - Wave Wireless Networking, a division of SPEEDCOM Wireless Corporation (Nasdaq: SPWC), announced that its SPEEDLAN 9000 last-mile wireless product line will begin shipping June 7.

SPEEDLAN 9000 11 Mbps wireless routers offer unsurpassed flexibility in meeting the challenges of designing, building, and managing today’s fixed wireless networks. By allowing the user to choose between mesh, star, or a point-to-point deployment, the SPEEDLAN 9000 provides a platform, which can grow with businesses and is easily re-deployed as their needs may change.

“SPEEDLAN 9000’s unrivalled combination of features will give customers more flexibility and scalability than offered with any other product today,” said Michael McKinney, CEO of SPEEDCOM. “No other product on the market offers users the option of deploying a simple building-to-building link, a complex point-to-multipoint star network, or a self-healing mesh network in a single, scalable package.”

Expand Current Wireless Network Coverage
Organizations deploying broadband wireless base stations, either as part of a campus network or a metropolitan area network, are often challenged with shadows in their network. These holes in the coverage area, caused when obstructions such as groves of trees, hills, and large buildings block the wireless signal, make it difficult to provide ubiquitous coverage for a wireless metropolitan area network, or even to connect all the buildings within a school district. SPEEDLAN 9000’s mesh technology helps customers solve this problem by using multi-hop IP routing to redirect network traffic around obstructions.

McKinney continued, “I think one of the most exciting aspects of this product is that it’s complimentary to any base station a broadband carrier or ISP might already have in place. SPEEDLAN 9000 will help broadband carriers use wireless technology to reach more customers and gain incremental revenue they might otherwise never realize.”

Campus, Business Park, and Residential Applications
With mesh technology, localized deployments in a campus, business park, apartment complex, or residential neighborhood are easier than ever. Unlike base station or access point products, no line-of-sight analysis is needed to determine if the building can “see” back to a base station. If a building can “see” any other building already on the mesh network, it is ready to be connected. Each new building added to a mesh network expands the customer’s ability to connect even more buildings, scaling up to 100 buildings per channel.

Leased Line Replacement
Using a star topology, users can connect buildings up to 25 miles apart at Ethernet LAN speeds. With less than a day’s work, users can eliminate leased line charges, increase connectivity speed and productivity, and take control over their building-to-building communications. With a SPEEDLAN 9000 base station, users can connect up to 100 remote buildings to a central location. Schools, hospitals, and banks can benefit by increasing connection speed between buildings and reducing or even eliminating leased line fees.

SPEEDLAN 9000 products are available in a variety of models. SPEEDLAN 9101 and 9104 are mesh-only products used to deploy a mesh network.
