Enterprise Development Corporation Unites Local Business Leaders, Entrepreneurs Mentor/Protégé Program Snowballs Across South Florida
Boca Raton, FL – May 7, 2002 – The Enterprise Development Corporation (EDC), a public/private partnership specializing in providing strategic business development services to emerging, science and technology-based companies, today announced that its innovative mentor/protégé program is gaining momentum as the organization continues to enroll seasoned executives to provide business advice to owners of emerging companies. EDC leads this initiative, known as the STAR BusinessLINC Coalition, whose primary partners also include the Broward Alliance and the Small Business Development Center of South Florida (SBDC).
“We are overwhelmed by the level of interest in this important program which offers entrepreneurial firms the opportunity to work with more experienced professionals who have achieved success in their lives,” stated Jane Teague, Executive Director, EDC. “The STAR BusinessLINC Coalition reinforces EDC’s commitment to engage the local business community on behalf of start-ups, and will enable us to achieve our mission of facilitating the creation and growth of science and technology companies. EDC is proud to lead the Coalition in support of this effort.”

The program, introduced in November 2001 through a grant provided by the US Small Business Administration, focuses on creating business-to-business linkages that have a good chance of enduring beyond the initial 15 hour commitment as outlined in the grant. To date, leading firms such as Citrix, Edwards & Angell, Sprint, Tyco, and Quest Diagnostics have enrolled as mentors, while young protégé companies include Allidex, Amazia, eQualitativeResearch, and Gardenia Systems.
The STAR BusinessLINC Coalition’s mission is to facilitate the creation and growth of science and technology small businesses in South Florida through the following initiatives: · Expanding business-to-business relationships between large and small business; · Providing “successful business owners” and skilled government mentoring to small businesses; · Providing businesses with online business development information to include a database of companies that are interested in mentor-protégé programs, and in community based local or statewide business development programs. For more information about the program, or to enroll as a mentor or protégé, contact Lori Metcalf at EDC, 561-620-8494 ext. 13, or lmetcalf@edc-tech.org.
