~ Companies Design and Integrate Leading Biometric and Security Technologies into Prototype Form in Less Than Four Weeks ~
FREMONT, CA and MELBOURNE, FLA – April 23, 2002 – SCM Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SCMM, Neuer Market: SMY), a leading provider of solutions that open the Digital World and AuthenTec, Inc., the leader in advanced biometric semiconductor technology, today announced a partnership to develop smart card readers equipped with fingerprint biometric sensors, offering a double layer of security to financial and government sectors. SCM will deliver its OEM customers a secure, all-in-one solution for physical and network access.
Working directly with AuthenTec engineers in Europe, SCM Microsystems’ Netherlands facility embedded AuthenTec’s EntréPad™ AES4000 fingerprint sensor into its smart card reader platform in less than a month, trimming weeks off of the development process. This achievement will enable SCM to deploy the combination reader as early as August 2002.
The SCM Micro smart card reader relies on AuthenTec’s patented TruePrint™ technology, which allows fingerprints to be read below the surface of the skin. The advantage of this silicon-based technology is its ability to obtain accurate fingerprint images and to avoid common recognition failures relating to contamination such as dirt, grime, dry skin or excessive moisture – issues that plague other surface-based imaging fingerprint sensors.
By bundling the SCM and AuthenTec technologies, SCM Micro will provide a cost-effective smart card reader that offers secure personal authentication without the need for pins and passwords. Corporate and government users can securely and privately exchange data on public networks and perform applications such as online transactions, e-commerce or network security based on public key infrastructure (PKI).
“With security becoming a top priority for financial and government executives, highly secure and cost-effective solutions like this biometric smart card reader are now in high demand,” said Jason Schouw, Vice President, Americas for SCM Microsystems. “Our partnership with AuthenTec enables us to quickly and efficiently integrate the leading fingerprint sensor technology with our own expertise in silicon interface technology, reader design and manufacturing. Our latest solution offers two levels of security and eliminates the need for difficult to remember passwords or pin codes.”
“AuthenTec is focused on delivering standard-setting fingerprint technology products that are convenient, reliable and easy to use,” said Jim Martin, Director of European Sales at AuthenTec, Inc. “Our ongoing collaboration with SCM will continue to bring sophisticated biometric security options to the forefront of daily security practices.”
SCM and AuthenTec will be demonstrating the new technology at CardTech/SecureTech, New Orleans, LA April 23-25, 2002 at Booth #839.
