2002 Manufactures Survey Key Findings

2002 Manufacturers’ Survey

1,440 surveys were mailed to all Pinellas County manufacturers in February 2002. 300 surveys were returned for a 21% response rate. Findings are significant at + 5%.

Key Findings

1. Manufacturers remain satisfied with their own business performance. 76% rate it as “excellent” or “good” in 2002, versus 79% “excellent” or “good” in 2001.

2. Manufacturing industry ratings are significantly lower. 50% of respondents report their industry is in “worse” shape now compared to a year ago, versus only 13% who reported “worse” shape last year.

3. 45% of respondents state their revenues are “worse” in 2002, versus only 15% who reported “worse” in 2001. However, they are optimistic about next year; 64% expect next year’s revenues to be better than this year’s.

4. While manufacturers report fewer full time employees now than a year ago (28% “fewer” versus 13% “fewer” last year), 44% expect to have more full time employees in a year.

5. It is easier to recruit qualified workers in 2002, although 41% still report it is “very difficult” or “somewhat difficult” to recruit skilled labor.

6. In the next three years, businesses are considering the following expansions: Product Line (59%), Upgrading Machinery (47%), Additional Facilities (13%) and New Facilities (27%).

7. 47% of county manufacturers engage in international trade. Top trading partners are: Canada (68%), Europe (58%), Mexico (46%) and South America (45%).

8. 90% of businesses use the Internet. Top uses include: Business E-mail (61%), Research (48%), Purchase Products/Services (39%), Marketing (38%) and Sales of Products/Services (35%).
