MIAMI/FT. LAUDERDALE – MARCH 25, 2002— Two of South Florida’s leading non-profit technology membership organizations have joined forces to strengthen the local, national and international presence of South Florida’s technology companies. The Miami Internet Alliance and the Technology Forum of South Florida have merged to become The South Florida Technology Alliance, which will officially launch with 250 member companies in the tri-county region.
The kick off for the new regional technology group will be a special “Meet The Technology Press” meeting on April 25 that is open to all area technology industry executives. The program will introduce regional journalists who cover the tech industry from a South Florida base and provide insight into their work, their views of the industry and what types of stories they are looking for.
The South Florida Technology Alliance creates a single powerful voice for the region in advocating on behalf of technology companies in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. The new group will be headed by Traver Gruen-Kennedy, chief strategist at Citrix, as chair; Jose Chao, publisher of Newsweek en Español as co-president; and Margaret Grisdela, president of Clientize.com Inc., as co-president. A listing of all board members is available at www.southfloridatech.org.
“The two organizations share similar goals, ideas and structures,” said Mr. Chao. “This is a very logical move that will extend our reach and increase the benefits to members and sponsors.
“By forming one regional organization we can speak with a much louder voice that will help command attention to our member companies and to the opportunity for South Florida to establish itself as the technology bridge to all of Latin America.”
“This is the realization of a dream of having a truly regional membership organization for tech businesses and professionals in South Florida,” said Mr. Gruen-Kennedy. “The Tech Alliance will enable us to work on a regional level to promote business, stimulate international trade and create growth opportunities for technology and media industry professionals throughout South Florida.” The new group’s coverage will extend from West Palm Beach to Homestead, encompassing Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Miami, Coral Gables and other cities in between. The South Florida Technology Alliance will target software, hardware, network security, systems integration, telecommunications, Web hosting and Internet services companies in the region. The group will offer programs and resources that provide opportunities for business development, strategic networking and career development.
The Miami Internet Alliance was organized in 1999 by André Vanyi-Robin and other technology executives with founding members Real Media, Ericsson, H-P, StarMedia and Heidrick & Struggles. The Technology Forum of South Florida was founded in 1997 by Margaret Grisdela and is now supported by a board that includes Citrix, SportsLine.com, KPMG, Edwards & Angell and others.
Marli Lutz, executive director of the Technology Forum, will serve as the executive director of the new group. Companies and individuals with membership in either organization will automatically become a member of the South Florida Technology Alliance. Dues structures for the two organizations have been harmonized to ensure the continuation of full membership benefits.
