DeVry Institute of Technology Holds First Graduation Ceremony for Post-Baccalaureate Degree Program In Information Technology
ORLANDO, Fla. - On Saturday, March 2, at 11 a.m., DeVry Institute of Technology in Orlando will hold its first graduation ceremony for students who have successfully completed its information technology bachelor’s degree program. The graduation ceremony will take place at Orlando City Hall in the rotunda, located at 400 S. Orange Ave.
DeVry’s information technology (IT) bachelor’s degree program is designed for students who already hold a bachelor’s degree and wish to pursue a career in IT. The 16 IT students who will be graduating from DeVry/Orlando are no exception – they all came to DeVry with bachelor’s degrees, many in unrelated areas of study.
“Because the IT degree program is offered in an accelerated format, these graduates have had to be highly-motivated and focused,” said Steve Brown, president of DeVry/Orlando. “These are all evening students who participated in a rigorous course of study, earning 48 credits in technology-based coursework in one year’s time. I believe they will be a tremendous asset to the high-tech industry in Central Florida, which is always in need of technology educated workers.”
For Elizabeth Velasco, 32, DeVry’s IT degree program was “intense and challenging” to complete while she worked full-time at Paysis International in Maitland, but says that the effort already has paid off for her. Velasco will soon transfer from Paysis’ customer support department to the conversion and implementation department, a promotion that she would not have been able to secure without her IT degree. “Even though I already had a bachelor’s degree in business administration, I needed to make myself more marketable by strengthening my technology capabilities,” Velasco says. “I realized that I wasn’t going to go as far as I wanted in my career without a bachelor’s degree in technology.”
Velasco, an honor student at DeVry and the first of her six siblings to graduate from college, was elected by her fellow IT graduates to speak at the graduation ceremony.
DeVry’s IT bachelor’s degree program is structured around a core of technology-oriented specialty courses, which emphasize applying computer technology to solve business problems. Students draw on their college and business backgrounds as they work in teams to develop solutions in case studies. Graduates are prepared for careers in such areas as: local area network administration, information systems project management, software support, IT consulting, IT management, and network management.
Employers interested in these graduates should call Mike Mattison, DeVry/Orlando director of career services, at 407/335-6403.
DeVry Institutes offer degree programs in technology and technology-based business. The parent company, DeVry Inc. (NYSE: DV), owns and operates DeVry University, which is composed of DeVry Institutes and Keller Graduate School of Management. DeVry University's 23 undergraduate campuses and 47 graduate centers enroll more than 54,000 students. DeVry Inc. also owns and operates Becker Conviser Professional Review.
