Framework Consulting Intensive in 2000 may have given Jamaica Bobsleigh Team Extra Strength, Stamina and Belief for Salt Lake
For Immediate Release:
Feb. 12th, 2002 As the Salt Lake City Winter Olympiad began last Friday, only three athletes represented the snow-less nation of Jamaica. The athletes were those of the Jamaica Bobsleigh Team, often remembered through the John Candy movie “Cool Runnings” loosely based on the team’s first Olympics in Lillihammer. Clive Mcdonald, Lascelles Brown and Winston Watt (a veteran of Lillihammer and Nagano who carried Jamaica’s flag this year) are the only members of the team who made it—the rest having been stopped through injury, lack of funding and equipment failure. Sadly, those who remained behind are the first-ever women’s team, who did extraordinarily well early in the season, and were expected to produce great things in Salt Lake. The men arrived in Utah after a trying year in which athletic prowess was insufficient to carry the day when sponsorship and funding were scarce. So the fact that the men’s team is there at all is indicative of a special reserve of strength and determination on the part of the team and its coaches, supporters, athletes, families and fans.
Framework Consulting, Inc., a Florida-based consulting firm is amongst the proud supporters, for Framework spent an intensive several days locked in a hotel conference room with the entire team, and coach Trond Knaplund in September 2000. Their goal, to work with the team members to generate sufficient drive, vision and cohesion to accomplish winning a medal in the Salt Lake City games two years later. At the time, the team was newly formed, consisting of an oddly mixed group of former Olympians, newly recruited track athletes, Jamaican military police and more. There was a noticeable lack of expectation for outstanding results, as most of the athletes had been individual performers and had little experience or preparation for the lack of spotlight one gets as a member of a team. The struggle to bond, and the disbelief that a medal could be won were obstacles to the team’s future—bigger obstacles than any physical impediment—for every member of the team was indisputably world-class. In the course of the intervention, the team took on using their opportunity as a chance to represent Jamaica to the world as a first-world nation, capable of rising to any occasion and playing in any arena.
Following the intensive work with Framework Consulting, the team went on to produce outstanding results. There was every reason to believe that Olympic medals would be in their future. Beginning with the push championships in Monaco where the team captured two gold medals and one silver, excellent results continued until a serious sleigh accident began a trend of difficulty. The crash of the high technology sector destroyed hope for the expected sponsorship by a computer firm, and the events of September 11th further depressed expectations for funding.
It is with great joy and pride that Framework Consulting greets the Jamaica Bobsleigh Team here, in the US. Our pride extends beyond the three team-members who are competing, and to the entire group, including the four-man teams and the women. The whole team is a formidable opponent in any competition.
The two-man bobsleigh competitions will take place on Saturday and Sunday, February 15th and 16th. Jamaicans will look on proudly as their countrymen compete in their nation’s honor, and we invite Americans to do the same and to appreciate the extra strength it takes to overcome the obstacles that stand between raw talent and world-class status.
