TAMPA, Fla. & OSLO, Norway--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 21, 2002--TSI Telecommunication Services Inc. (TSI) and Telenor Global Services (TGS) today announced that they have formed an agreement to offer roaming between the companies' networks using the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX) as a common peering point.

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Roaming Exchange (GRX) is a centralized IP routing network that interconnects GPRS networks and enables global roaming coverage. GPRS roaming is necessary for smooth transition to 3G wireless technologies.

"Instead of operators connecting and managing innumerable links with each other, this interconnection provides a hub," said Michael O'Brien, TSI vice president of marketing.

"Through the connection with TSI, operators can link to many GRXs and be connected to a global network. It greatly simplifies global roaming from both a technical and business perspective and gives subscribers seamless wireless access to applications while roaming. We're looking forward to making several more announcements of this type in the coming weeks."

"As GRX-providers, we are pleased to enable our customers to reach a large number of roaming partners worldwide. With this inter-GRX agreement, TGS can offer our mobile operator customers coverage in the U.S. and in Hong Kong, and TSI will have coverage in Europe, as well as North America and Asia Pacific," said Terje Haufmann, TGS product director.

"This is an important step in establishing a global roaming network for GPRS and UMTS services, parallel to the network for voice and SMS services that we have today. It is also of great importance that this peering agreement include security procedures, which is an essential issue in the GPRS roaming service."
