Ongoing Regional Workforce Study Shows "Snapshot" Of Area's Workforce Condition
ORLANDO, Fla. (December 5, 2001) - A study being conducted of employers located along the Florida High Tech Corridor has provided the first "snapshot" of the state of the region's workforce - with 2,784 firms reporting, the study shows an anticipated net increase of more than 950 jobs during the 180 day period extending from August 1, 2001 through January 31, 2002.
Once completed, this study will be the most comprehensive ever of Central Florida's workforce, eventually seeking the input from more than 47,000 of the region's employers. This project is being conducted through a partnership of the Florida High Tech Corridor Council; the Tampa Bay Partnership; the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission; the Workforce Development Board of Enterprise Florida and the State of Florida; and other regional workforce boards and local economic development partners along the 21-county High Tech Corridor.
"While Florida industries such as tourism and aviation have experienced definite declines, this preliminary report indicates that the net impact of the nation's economic downturn on our region might not be as negative as has been feared," said Randy Berridge, president of the Florida High Tech Corridor Council. "This is good news both for our local residents and businesses."
Other preliminary results show that virtually all net downsizing reported to date has taken place in a few large companies in the manufacturing, construction and mining industries. Other occupations and industries contacted have shown flat employment or workforce growth.
ERISS Corporation, a recognized leader in the creation and dissemination of job market intelligence and workforce solutions that has done similar projects across the United States, will be conducting the survey. The information in the final report will be used to build an interactive Internet application that will provide area jobseekers and employers with current job market data. The Web site, www.usworks.com/floridahightech, will include online tools for both of these groups in addition to workforce and economic development professionals.
