TAMPA, Fla. -- (Dec. 8, 2003) -- Governor Jeb Bush saw first-hand Friday the power of Florida Medicaid’s new wireless patient care program when he attended a demonstration of eMPOWERx™ by Gold Standard Multimedia (Gold Standard), a leader in clinical information and services and the developer of the eMPOWERx™ system. eMPOWERx™ is presently being deployed to 1,000 Medicaid providers in Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Miami, Tallahassee and Pensacola, under the terms of an agreement between Gold Standard and Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration.
eMPOWERx™ integrates Medicaid’s Preferred Drug List, clinically-relevant drug information and interactions screening tools, and patient-specific medication histories. eMPOWERx™ arms healthcare providers at the point-of-care with a patient care system designed to improve health outcomes, while facilitating cost savings by reducing fraud and abuse within the Medicaid prescription drug benefit program. Leveraging wireless technology, eMPOWERx™ operates via a secure, integrated Pocket PC/PCS phone, utilizing Sprint Communications’ wireless network. Access to the depth of patient-specific drug information provided by the eMPOWERx™ program enables Medicaid healthcare professionals to make well-informed decisions and to better coordinate care between providers.
"Prescription drug abuse is a serious issue in Florida and throughout the Country. Florida is taking aggressive action to reduce the human and financial toll of that abuse, including implementing state-of-the-art technology to provide physicians with vital medication information at the point-of-care," says Governor Bush. "Gold Standard's system is an excellent example of the proactive approach Florida is taking to improve the health and welfare of our citizens. In particular, it demonstrates Florida Medicaid's commitment to reducing costs and improving outcomes by empowering physicians through the use of innovative technologies and partnerships with Florida companies."
Adds Gold Standard CEO Russ Thomas: “Improving outcomes for Florida Medicaid beneficiaries by reducing fraud, abuse and costs is a critical mission. We are pleased to participate by providing Medicaid physicians with access to the real-time information they need to make the informed medication decisions for their patients. eMPOWERx™ is a powerful tool in the battle against prescription medication fraud and abuse, and gives physicians a valuable resource for improving continuity of care.”
Governor Bush attended a special screening of the eMPOWERx™ system at GSM’s headquarters during a daylong visit to Tampa. During the demonstration, he was shown how eMPOWERx™ provides Medicaid physicians with a complete view of a patient’s prescription history and the State’s prescribing guidelines. This allows care regimes to be fine-tuned to achieve intended outcomes, while at the same time addressing compliance issues and the avoidance of adverse drug events.
