Smallest SANsymphony Configuration Exceeds Industry's Biggest Numbers

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (October 1, 2002) - DataCore Software, a leading provider of enterprise-class, open-storage networking software, today published record-breaking performance numbers for its flagship SANsymphony(tm) storage platform. In an unprecedented full disclosure benchmark spanning the entire envelope of storage performance and audited by the Evaluator Group, transaction rates as high as 400,000 IOPS (Input/Output Operations per second) and data throughputs of as much as 2.1 GB/s were sustained. This represents:

-- 8 to 25 times the highest-published performance of any other virtualization scheme
-- 3 to 20 times the performance of any mid-range array
-- 2 to 10 times the performance of any comparably configured high-end storage subsystem

Moreover, the results were achieved using the smallest recommended SANsymphony software configuration: two standard dual Intel XEON processors running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server operating as networked Storage Domain Servers. The total cost of the benchmarked storage hardware, including disks, was less than US $65,000.

"DataCore's IOP ratings far exceed any single-box storage system we've ever encountered. Throughput numbers were also exceptional," remarked Randy Kerns of the Evaluator Group, Colorado-based analysts who also audit the Storage Performance Council's SPC-1 benchmark. "These numbers were achieved with inexpensive and standard hardware. Prior skepticism over DataCore's performance must have been based purely on conjecture. The actual results are impressive and will have impact throughout the storage industry."

"Performance is crucial to large-scale storage network consolidation," said Ken Horner, vice president of marketing for DataCore. "DataCore has claimed for some time that SANsymphony networks capable of millions of IOPS and tens of gigabytes per second of throughput, are entirely practical today. The results of these tests, as well as SPC-1 benchmarks and other real-world characterizations to follow, corroborate just that. Most customers factor these relative measures of value and scalability into their enterprise storage decision-making process. I'm sure they'd like to see the rest of the suppliers publicly disclose their performance profile in a similar, independently validated fashion."

"Our rivals have created confusion around one key point: 'in-band versus out-of-band,'" said Ziya Aral, DataCore chairman and CTO. "If only the routing function is handled 'in-band' then certainly an added penalty is to be expected - although it is no more guaranteed to be a bottleneck than a switch is. But if the network platform is responsible for storage service delivery, as SANsymphony is, it does not take a leap of faith to conclude that a network infrastructure - consisting of storage domain servers with the fastest CPU, the fastest memory, and the most up-to-date I/O structures - inevitably speeds the underlying storage. That is true of simple disk, the focus for this set of benchmarks, and more so when combined with advanced, large-cache model storage controllers such as Hitachi Thunders and Lightnings or IBM Sharks. Such sophisticated multi-tier cache hierarchies yield even greater application performance benefits. These measurements should help to put a lot of the contrary claims to bed."

"Most of our competitors now concede that what we do works," continued Aral. "They console themselves by believing it just can't be fast enough. It's not physics that is at-issue; it is human nature. Rather than face an unpleasant reality, sometimes it is just a whole lot easier to renew one's membership in the Flat Earth Society."

The complete spectrum of IOPS, throughput, I/O service times, and configuration parameters is posted for public review at DataCore's web site, http://www.datacore.com/forms/form_request.asp?id=perform_test
